Conference Realignment

Conferences aren't fixed forever. Every few seasons, the league checks whether its membership still makes sense, and programs move, the way college hockey conferences realign over time.

Three Ways a Program Moves

Absorption. An independent program that's been strong for a couple of straight seasons earns an invitation into a real conference — the smallest one with room, so the move also keeps conferences reasonably balanced in size.
Poaching. A program stuck in a conference well below its actual level, after sustaining strength for a couple of seasons, gets pulled up into a clearly stronger conference. This is how a team can rise on pure merit, not only when a spot opens up above it.
Demotion. A program that spends a couple of seasons stuck near the bottom of its own conference — one rough-but-not-rock-bottom season in between doesn't save it, only a genuine climb back to mid-table does — is moved to a lower conference, and the strongest team down there is promoted in a clean, direct swap. No conference changes size, and nobody's left without a home.

This happens on a two-season cycle, not every year — realignment is a periodic event, not constant background churn. Each cycle is also capped at a couple of moves per category (absorptions, poaches, demotions), so it stays a handful of real, meaningful shakeups rather than a flood of changes at once.

What a Move Actually Changes

A conference move follows through on both the ledger and the room:

Your Revenue Share income is tied to your current conference's exposure, so moving up raises your income and moving down lowers it — but not until the following season. This year's Revenue Share was already set before the move happened, so the raise (or cut) shows up starting next year, not immediately. See Finances.
Your whole roster feels it, too — a one-time mood swing hits the team on a promotion or a demotion, positive for moving up and negative for moving down, visible on the player profile for the rest of that season before fading.

A Conference's Own Standing Can Rise or Fall

It's not just programs that move — a conference's national standing isn't set in stone either. Every realignment cycle, each conference's exposure quietly drifts toward what its current members actually deserve: a conference whose programs are performing well can gradually climb into a bigger stage, and one whose programs are fading can gradually slip. This happens slowly, over many seasons, the way a conference's real-world TV deal and reputation shift over a decade, not a single season.

Most of that drift is invisible day-to-day — you'll only get a heads-up when it's about to change your actual Revenue Share check. Cross a real income threshold, either direction, and you'll see it in your inbox: "[Conference]'s National Standing Rises" (a bigger check coming) or "...Slips" (a smaller one), for your own conference or any other you're watching in League News.

Your Program Is Never Auto-Moved

If your own program qualifies for an absorption or a poach, you get an invitation — accept it or decline it, entirely your call. You're fully shielded from demotion: a relegation can only happen to an AI program, never to you.

You'll also see it coming — a Realignment Watch flags any AI program at risk of relegation before it happens — and every move that does happen, anywhere in the league, is recorded permanently. Accepting Your Own Invitation

Say yes, and it's more than a line change on your Team Profile. You get a one-time cash injection straight into your Revenue Share on top of the conference's higher standing, plus a temporary lift to your program's Buzz and Appeal (see Program Prestige & Your Job Security) that fades out over the following weeks — the same kind of momentary spotlight a deep tournament run earns you. You'll also get a proper welcome to your new home: a one-time orientation screen introducing the conference's history, its top players, its rivalries, and exactly what the move is worth to your program in plain numbers, before you get back to the season.

Decline, and nothing changes — you stay put, keep your streak, and a strong program gets invited again down the road.
